Sawadeekup everyone, we meet again in Eng4Fun with ‘kru’ Peter. In today’s lesson, I will be telling you the differences between learning English in Thailand and learning English in Australia from my very own experience.
English classes in Thailand “In today’s lesson, we will be learning about grammar!”
Going to English classes in Thailand feels like dejavu, Monday we learn grammar, Tuesday we learn grammar, Wednesday we learn grammar, by Thursday and Friday, everyone would probably skip class. Students become too caught up with their grammar and accuracy of using the English language which disrupts the fluency of their speaking. I remember when I wanted to ask my teacher if could go use the toilet. A lot was going through my mind, like how was I supposed to start the sentence, “excuse me”, or “dear teacher”, or “to whom it may concern”, whether I should use “can I”, or “may I”, or “shall I”, which tense I should use, “go”, or “went”, or “going”. I decided to put my hand up and all of a sudden, the words that were in my head just disappeared. Eventually, I came up with the following words, “Can I go for a ‘khee’ (means to poo in Thai)?” The whole class laughed, taking away all my dignity. After that day, everyone called me “nong khee”. Thank you English. 
English classes in Australia, “In today’s lesson, we will not be learning about grammar!”
When I moved to Australia, I was surprised how grammar was hardly taught in English classes. I asked all my Aussie friends about the verb tenses, the past, present, and future, they replied back saying
“if you keep asking me, you’re not going to have a past, present, or the future”.
Lovely friends. It seems like English classes in Australia focuses on everything apart from grammar, we often read the newspapers, listen to the radio, watch short English’ films, and most importantly, we would interact as a class. After most classes, the teacher would get students to share what they have heard, learnt, or experienced during the lesson as part of the final class activity. This way, students get to put their theories into practice.
My suggestion is that you should not only focus on the accuracy of the English language, the fluency of the English language is equally as important. Learn your grammar and immediately put it to practice. So the next time you want to go to the toilet you know you should say, “Excuse me, may I please go to the toilet?”

ในห้องเรียนภาษาอังกฤษที่ไทย คุณครูจะบอกว่า"วันนี้เราจะมาเรียนเรื่องไวยากรณ์กันนะครับ"
เรียนภาษาอังกฤษแบบนี้มันก็น่าเบื่อ เรียนไปแบบเดิม ๆ ทุกวัน วันจันทร์ก็ไวยากรณ์ วันอังคารก็ไวยากรณ์ วันพุธก็ไวยากรณ์ พอถึงวันพฤหัสและศุกร์ อาจารย์เตรียมตัวคุยกับตัวเองได้เลย นักเรียนโดดเรียนหมด เรียนไปเรียนมานักเรียนจะเริ่มกังวลเรื่องใช้คำผิดๆถูกๆ ทำให้ไม่กล้าพูดภาษาอังกฤษออกมาด้วยความมั่นใจ ผมจำได้ว่ามีอยู่วันหนึ่ง ผมจะขอตัวไปเข้าห้องน้ำ ก่อนถามนี่คิดหนักเลยว่าจะเริ่มต้นยังไง "excuse me" หรือว่า "dear teacher" หรือว่า "to whom it may concern" ไม่รู้ว่าจะใช้ "can I" หรือว่า "may I" หรือว่า "shall I" ไม่แน่ใจว่าต้องใช้ tense ไหน "go" หรือว่า "went" หรือว่า "going" อยู่ดีๆก็นึกคำออกแล้วก็ตะโกนออกไปว่า "Can I go for a ขี้?" กลายเป็นตัวตลกของห้องทันทีเลย ศักดิ์ศรีนี่หายไปกับคำพูดที่พึ่งกล่าวออกไป หลังจากวันนั้นผมก็ได้ฉายาใหม่มาว่า น้องขี้ ขอบใจนะภาษาอังกฤษ
ในห้องเรียนภาษาอังกฤษที่ออสเตรเลีย "วันนี้เราจะมาเรียนทุกเรื่องยกเว้นไวยากรณ์นะครับ"
ช่วงแรก ๆ ที่ผมได้ย้ายมา ออสเตรเลีย ก็แปลกใจว่าทำไมที่นี่เขาไม่ค่อยสอนเรื่องไวยากรณ์กัน แปลกมากที่ชาวออสซี่ ไม่เก่งในเรื่องไวยากรณ์แต่สามารถใช้ภาษาอังกฤษได้อย่างคล่องแคล่ว ผมเคยถามเพื่อน ๆ ออสซี่เกี่ยวกับเรื่อง verb tense past present แล้วก็ future พวกเขาก็ตอบมาด้วยความไม่พอใจ "ถ้าเธอถามฉันเรื่องนี่อีกนะ ฉันจะทำให้เธอไม่มี past present หรือว่า future อีกต่อไป" น่ารักกันจริงๆ ดูเหมือนว่าการสอนภาษาอังกฤษที่ ออสเตรเลีย จะเน้นไปทางใช้ภาษาแล้วไม่ค่อยกังวลเรื่องไวยากรณ์เท่าไหร่ เขาจะให้เราไปอ่านหนังสือพิมพ์ ฟังวิทยุ ดูหนัง แล้วสิ่งที่สำคัญที่สุด ก็คือการที่ทุกๆคนในห้องเขาพูดคุย แล้วก็ ช่วยเหลือกันและกัน ก่อนเลิกเรียนครูเขาก็จะให้นักเรียนแต่ละคนขึ้นไปพูดหน้าห้องว่าวันนี้เรียนอะไรมาบ้าง ซึ่งเป็นโอกาสที่ดี ที่นักเรียนจะสามารถเอาสิ่งที่ตัวเองได้เรียนรู้มาไปใช้ในชีวิตประจำวัน
ผมขอแนะนำเลยว่า อย่ามัวแต่เป็นห่วงว่าตัวเองจะพูดผิดหรือพูดถูก อย่าไปคิดมากเรื่องไวยากรณ์ของภาษาอังกฤษ ให้ความสำคัญกับการใช้ภาษาด้วย ใช้ผิดๆถูก ๆ ไม่เป็นไร ค่อยๆเรียนรู้จากประสบการณ์ไป คราวหน้า ถ้าใครอยากจะเข้าห้องน้ำจะได้พูดด้วยความมั่นใจว่า "Excuse me, may I please go to the toilet?"
