Fire up the BARBIE!
I was told that to eat like an Aussie is to fire up the barbie in the backyard. Barbie? I never knew that Aussies hate Barbie so much. No wonder I never saw it on T.V. It turned out that Barbie is actually short for barbecue. One of the tradition of Australia’s food culture. Sawad-dee-kup everyone, we meet again in Eng4Fun with ‘kru’ Peter. Today’s lesson will be aboutthe food culture inthe land of the Aussies.
Thai food is known for its complete set of rich flavours, spicy, sour, salty and sweet. What about Australia? Surprisingly, even most of my Aussie friends struggle to answer the question. Some said they had no clue, others said Australia doesn’t really have traditional food. In fact, Australia doesn’t have itsown food culture, Aussies have taken ideas from different nationalities and have adapted the food to their own likings. So when you come to Australia, you will see a diverse range of food selection, from European countries right through to Asia. But the most unique food item on an Aussie plate, has to be kangaroo meat. They can be found at any supermarket in Australia. How can they do such thing?
Some restaurants are not strict about how you dress while others demand a dress code. I remember once, after a basketball game me and my mates wanted to try an Australian owned restaurant for a change. With a sweaty singlet, basketball shorts, flip flops, messed up hair, and smelling like a homeless man. The staff looked at me and immediately said, “Cleaning equipment are in the closet, your shift starts in 15 minutes, go grab something to eat first.” Since when was I a cleaner here? But I didn’t mind, I replied asking her, “free food?”
There’s a fine line between eating out and fine dining. Eating out refers to a less formal environment where you can dress however you like. Fine dining, a common tradition of the European culture, refers to a formal eating environment where people are expected to dress up nicely for special occasions. Most Australian owned restaurants are fine dining restaurants so make sure you don’t get yourself mistaken for a cleaner.
Food culture in Australia is not unique but very diverse. A mixture of European and Asian cuisines had given Australia the reputation of fine dining. So the next time someone asks you about Australian food, make sure you tell them to fire up the Barbie, eat some kangaroo, and get ready to do some cleaning for free food.

อาหารไทยของเราจะเด่นที่รสชาติ เปรี้ยว, เค็ม, เผ็ด และ หวาน มีครบทุกรสเลย แล้วอาหารออสเตรเลียหล่ะ รสชาติเป็นยังไง? แปลกมากที่เพื่อน ๆ ชาวออสซี่ของผมส่วนใหญ่ไม่สามารถตอบคำถามนี้ได้ บางคนตอบว่า คิดไม่ออก บางคนก็ตอบว่าประเทศออสเตรเลียไม่มีอาหารเป็นของตัวเอง... อันที่จริงแล้ว ‘ออสเตรเลีย’ ไม่ได้มีอาหารที่โดดเด่นเป็นของตัวเองเท่าไหร่นัก ส่วนมากชาวออสซี่จะนำไอเดียอาหารจากชาติอื่น ๆ มาดัดแปลงให้เข้า และเหมาะสมกับประเทศของตัวเอง เพราะฉะนั้นจะเห็นได้ว่า ประเทศออสเตรเลียนั้นมีอาหารให้เลือกในหลากหลายรูปแบบ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอาหารจากทวีปยูโรปจนไปถึงแทบเอเชียของเรา
แต่เมนูที่ผมอยากแนะนำก็ต้องอันนี้เลยครับ ‘เนื้อจิงโจ้’ สด ๆ จากออสเตรเลีย!! ซึ้งเนื้อจิงโจ้สามารถหาซื้อได้ตามซุปเปอร์มาร์เก็ตทั่วไปในออสเตรเลีย "เขาทำกับน้องจิงโจ้แสนน่ารักอย่างงี้ได้ยังไง?!” :(( 
ร้านอาหารส่วนใหญ่จะไม่เคร่งเรื่องการแต่งตัวของลูกค้า แต่บางร้านก็กำหนดไว้เลยว่าต้องแต่งตัวอย่างเนี้ยบ! ไม่งั้นห้ามเข้า! ผมกับเพื่อน ๆ เคยไปทานข้าวที่ร้านอาหาร หลังจากที่ไปเล่นบาสเกตบอลมา ผมเดินเข้าไปในร้านอาหาร ด้วยเสื้อกล้ามที่เต็มไปด้วยเหงื่อ กางเกงขาสั้นโชว์ขนหน้าแข้ง(sexyสุด ๆ) พร้อมกับ รองเท้าแตะ และ ผมที่ยุ่งอย่างกับรังนก กลิ่นนี้หึ่งเหมือนไม่ได้อาบน้ำมาเป็นชาติ... พนักงานหันมามองแล้วก็พูดว่า "อุปกรณ์ทำความสะอาดอยู่ในตู้นะค่ะ อีก 15 นาทีค่อยเริ่มงาน ไปหาอะไรกินก่อนได้เลยค่ะ" ฮ่ะ! นี้ผมเป็นคนทำความสะอาดตั้งแต่เมื่อไหร่? แต่มาคิดดูอีกที ก็โอเคนะ ผมเลยหันไปคอนเฟิร์มกับพนักงานอีกทีว่า "อาหารฟรีใช่ไหมเจ๊?"
การทานอาหารจะมีอยู่สองแบบคือ eating out และ fine dining ซึ่งแตกต่างกันเพียงเล็กน้อย บรรยากาศของการ eating out จะค่อนข้างชิว แต่งตัวสบาย ๆ ส่วนบรรยากาศของ fine dining จะเป็นทางการหน่อย ต้องแต่งตัวให้เรียบร้อย แต่ร้านอาหารหลายร้านในออสเตรเลียจะเป็นแบบ fine dining เพราะฉะนั้นอย่าทำให้เขาเข้าใจผิดว่าเราเป็นคนทำความสะอาดนะครับ
วัฒนธรรมการทานอาหารของออสเตรเลียอาจจะไม่มีอะไรที่โดดเด่นมากนัก แต่ก็จะมีความหลากหลายจากชาติอื่น ๆ ซื่งทำให้ประเทศออสเตรเลียมีชื่อเสียงในการทานอาหารแบบ fine dining... สรุปว่า ถ้ามีใครถามว่าอาหารออสเตรเลียเป็นยังไง ให้ตอบไปว่า "จะกินให้เหมือนชาวออสซี่ก็ต้องจุดไฟ Barbie ปิ้งน้องจิงโจ้กิน" แล้วเจอกันใหม่ สวัสดีครับ
